Hi Everyone - this is Pam (Kira's mom). I am not sure she will be able to post before she officially leaves for Africa, so I thought I would start. Kira left for Philly this morning and met her fellow trainees today. Lots of bonding and preparations over the next 2 days, then Wednesday they head to Africa. She will be located in Niger for the first few months in training. At some point during training, she will learn where she will be stationed for the remainder of her program. She will live with a host family while training, so she will be immersed in the language and culture. Hopefully she will have Internet access occasionally so she can keep us up to date.
Meanwhile, I wanted to express something Kira talked a lot about before leaving. She has amazing family, friends and friends that may as well be family (you know who you are). Baltimore meant a lot to her and she will dearly miss her outings with her drunken cohorts (I mean friends!) Kira struggled leaving all of you, even if only for a short time. Ok - so I am optimistic that it will feel like a short time!
I ask all of you to keep in touch, let Kira know we are proud of her and that we all look forward to the Welcome Home party - currently scheduled for October 2010 at one of the familiar bars in Federal Hill!

I love my Kiro! I am sorry that I missed the big hooray. Sucks when you are relying on someone else. I know I know, slacker. I am! ;)
I am going to miss you. I feel like I have been doing that for a while now because you have been in MD and me in SC.... :(

Alyshia :)
This is a super cool way to keep in touch. I know for sure it's gonna feel like a short time and Kira is gonna be flying back here just as fast as we got rid of her (j/k Kira). I'm gonna mark that month off in my calendar.
Kira, my darling,
I meant for us to chat before you took off, but this is an awesome way to be in touch :) I could have swore that you would be in the States a little longer than you were after leaving MD...I guess I'll just cry myself to sleep tonight since I didn't hear my sweet Kira's voice once more before her departure. How depressing am I? :) I left all this drama for you so you know how much I love you...even though I think you know :) I love you dearly and I know you are going to thrive and learn so much about yourself and the world around you. Once again, I am so jealous, but so excited for you, Kira. You're incredible and I can't wait to hear your stories and see your pictures. Te quiero mucho!
If I had half the love, warmth, and selflessness towards the world and the people in it as you do I'd be a much better person.
You make this world a much better place to be in... One country at a time.
I love you
Kira, all the best to you darling!!! It is my belief that my continent will treat you well, and hope you soak it all in. Africa (no matter what country) is a beautiful place to be. I also hope they get to enjoy and appreciate your good nature as much as we do.
Kisses!
Hey Babe! Got the email today that you arrived and got a picture of everyone! Nice to see. Can't wait to hear how you are doing. I love you and miss you already! Momma
